A family of mice collects provisions, and everyone works except Frederick, who seemingly does nothing. But unbeknownst to the others, he also provisions himself: sunbeams, colors, words... When winter arrives, his companions recognize that his poetic mission had been essential for the mice to better endure the harshness of the winter season. And so Frederick is accepted just as he is. Leo Lionni is one of the pioneers of the modern picture book. One of the themes addressed in the story is individuality, the discovery and acceptance of one's own identity. Frederick is a poet and demonstrates that, in his own way, he also contributes to the collective. The artist is not presented as a self-marginalized being, but as someone necessary for others. Faced with the importance of work, Frederick asserts the need to feed oneself with more than just straw and nuts. Frederick may seem selfish, but that selfishness is merely a display of loyalty to himself. Far from reproaching him for his apparent passivity, his burrow neighbors allow him to meditate, respect his introspection, and are curious about that mysterious world which, in the end, they appreciate. The author reflects the importance of individual freedom: readers feel protected, knowing that the mice will respect Frederick's individuality. Leo Lionni conveys to us that one must be what one desires, and be it without fear, since others will be able to accept and understand it.
