“For a month, every night, the Hedgehog would climb a pine tree and clean the stars. ‘If I don’t wipe them with a cloth every night,’ he thought, ‘they’re sure to lose their shine.’” This is how the first of seven stories written over fifty years ago by Russian writer Sergey Kozlov begins. Hedgehog, Bear Cub, Rabbit, and Squirrel, the protagonists of these fun and tender stories, are kind, clever, and cheerful. Through their actions, they invite us to reflect on the importance of sharing, respecting others, caring for our environment, and imagining and dreaming. With their tender and intelligent humor and different layers of reading, they remind us of Janosch’s Little Bear and Little Tiger, or Arnold Lobel’s well-known characters.
