Emil is 5 years old, his pranks are always funny, and his antics have the whole town in an uproar. He is ingenious, cheerful, affectionate, and although his intentions are always good, he sometimes ends up in a lot of trouble.

He lives on a farm and is one of Astrid Lindgren's most beloved characters because he is inspired by the stories and anecdotes his father Samuel told her about when he was a child.
