If Zoë were simply A. S. Neill's daughter, it would be interesting to know her vision for Summerhill today. But her relationship with the school goes far, far beyond that. She was born and lived at Summerhill and was a student for 16 years. All four of her children have been Summerhill students (one of whom currently works there) and now her two grandchildren attend. She has taught classes and since 1985 has directed "the world's oldest children's democracy." She herself says that Summerhill is deeply ingrained in her, in her bones. And it's possible she's understating it. Summerhill was and continues to be that school where building treehouses is as important as learning fractions. Where you can skip class and play all day if you wish. Where there are no exams or evaluations. Where children matter as much as adults, develop freely, and are happy above all else. That school constantly questioned by institutions and which recently overcame a complicated legal process that jeopardized its continuity. That school which, 90 years later, still seems extraordinary to us.
